Lanckut Castle, located in the Polish town of the same name, houses one of Europe’s most extensive and exquisite collections of equestrian tack and harnesses. Due to its close ties with Hermès, the castle’s museum also holds a complete set of saddlery crafted by Hermès. Designer Jan Bajtlik—like many Poles—visited the castle frequently during his childhood. For this pattern, he selected illustrations of twenty carriages, halved each carriage, and then playfully recombined the halves in imaginative pairings, creating a visual chain game—hence the name ‘Exquisite Carriages.’ By folding the scarf, viewers can discover matching halves that reunite to reconstruct the original carriage images.
