The surface finishing and brushing on the Dandong version are noticeably finer than those on the Shanghai version—though the gap is narrower than that between the Dandong and Shanghai versions of caliber 4130. Compared to its own 4130, Shanghai’s 4131 shows clear improvement in finishing, yet still falls short of Dandong’s standard. Additionally, the Shanghai 4131’s mainplate and bridges exhibit a noticeably darker hue than Dandong’s—even when positions were swapped under identical lighting (Fig. 3), confirming this difference stems from plating工艺 (coating process), not illumination. Fig. 4 shows Dandong; Fig. 5 shows Shanghai—both employ beveled, angled polishing (chamfering), but Dandong executes vertical grain finishing on the bevels more precisely. Fig. 6 (Dandong) and Fig. 7 (Shanghai) reveal superior engraving quality on the Dandong movement. Fig. 8 (Dandong) and Fig. 9 (Shanghai) highlight the shock-protection systems: Dandong retains the genuine KIF shock absorber, whereas Shanghai uses a faux ‘free-sprung balance cock’ (i.e., a simulated no-regulator-bridge design)—yet regulator pins remain present on the back, visible in the image. In terms of functional performance and service/rework rate, Dandong and Shanghai 4131 calibers are virtually identical; differences lie solely in finishing quality. Notably, Dandong’s 4131 achieves near-Omega authenticity in finishing: Geneva stripes are clearly rendered (though slightly less crisp than Omega’s), beveling matches Omega’s standard in both geometry and vertical grain execution, while bridge surface cleanliness remains marginally behind Omega’s benchmark. Considering its ~USD 4,000 price point, this level of craftsmanship is truly exceptional!
